Credit Unions Unite for Tumbler Ridge Students
Salmon Arm, BC – May 4, 2026 — On April 24–25, SASCU hosted the Inaugural Joint BC Peer Group in Salmon Arm, bringing together leaders from 12 credit unions across Northern BC, the Okanagan, and the Kootenays for two days of collaboration and shared learning.
“This initiative highlights the strength of the credit union system and what can be achieved when we work together,” said Barry Delaney, President & CEO, SASCU. “In times like this, it’s especially important that we come together to support communities facing difficult circumstances.”
Participants chose to pivot their planned 50/50 fundraiser to support the Tumbler Ridge community following recent tragic events impacting the region. The idea, brought forward by Lake View Credit Union, focused on directing funds to local students.
“With a branch in Tumbler Ridge, this initiative is deeply meaningful to our team,” said Darren Hamre, Director, Lake View Credit Union. “Our thoughts are with the community, and we’re grateful to be part of an effort that supports students and helps contribute to their wellbeing during a difficult time.”
The raffle licence was secured by the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School Parent Advisory Council (TRE/TRSS PAC), ensuring all funds raised went directly to student supports.
Over the two-day event, credit unions worked together to reach a $20,000 fundraising goal—the maximum allowed under the licence. By day two, the raffle had sold out. Participants continued contributing beyond that, writing additional cheques directly to the PAC.
“This effort speaks to the compassion and collaboration at the heart of the credit union system,” said Darla Ashton, Director, StellerVista Credit Union. “It’s inspiring to see organizations come together to support students and help strengthen a community during a challenging time.”
When the winning ticket was drawn, Kootenay Savings Credit Union announced they would donate their 50/50 winnings back to the PAC. Final totals are still being calculated, with contributions expected to reach between $22,000 and $25,000 in support of students in Tumbler Ridge.
In a letter of thanks, the TRE/TRSS PAC shared: “The resources will be used to enhance our learning spaces, helping us create environments that are more comfortable, welcoming, and supportive for all learners.”
