SASCU Awards Green Resilience Grant Recipients

SALMON ARM (April 20, 2026) — SASCU Credit Union announced the recipients of its Green Resilience Grant, supporting projects that advance environmental sustainability through tangible, practical action.

SASCU introduced a semi-annual grant program late last year, allowing for shifts in focus between each call for applications. The first grant targeted projects focused on empowerment and economic strengthening. This latest round rewards projects that implement green practices and solutions while also enhancing community and business resilience.

“It is inspiring to see the creative approaches these projects are taking to embed green practices and tools,” said Dave Witt, Chair of SASCU’s Community Engagement Committee. “Each of these initiatives demonstrates a clear commitment to environmental responsibility, making a positive impact in the communities we serve.”

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) will receive $10,000 for its “Upcycle” Project: Re purpose, Re use, Re imagine. Upcycle will restyle used clothing through workshops, which will be shared through a community-wide fashion show. “The Hudson Thrift Shoppe, a social enterprise through Canadian Mental Health Association Shuswap-Revelstoke, is thrilled to receive this grant, which inspires community members to turn creativity into climate action,” said Shannon Hecker, Manager of Wellness and Community Engagement Programs at CMHA. “By tackling fast fashion through a series of workshops, we are addressing reducing textile waste, and building hands-on sustainability skills, especially among youth.””

U Grow Girl will use its $6,000 grant to buy harvesting equipment that will enhance local food production capacity while reducing waste, providing them longer term self-sufficiency in the process. “Support from SASCU strengthens a model where local agriculture, business partnerships, and community come together to fund healing,” explained U Grow Girl Executive Director Leha Marshall. “This project ensures more locally grown food moves through our region while directly supporting access to care for survivors.”

Enactus Okanagan College, an organization that inspires student entrepreneurs who are passionate about making positive change, was awarded $5,000 for its Paper Trail: Beeswax Coated Firebricks initiative. This innovative project transforms paper waste into a sustainable fire-starting alternative, reducing landfill impact while promoting circular economy practices.
“We are sincerely thankful to SASCU for supporting Paper Trail, an initiative started by two students at Enactus OC,” said Paper Trail Co-Founder Chelsey Simmons. “This project represents the passion and innovation of students working to create practical environmental solutions, and this funding helps turn our ideas into meaningful impact within the community.”

The Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club received $10,000 towards its new solar power system. This project reduces reliance on traditional energy sources and supports the club’s efforts to operate in a more environmentally responsible way. “This funding is a huge step forward for our club and the community we serve,” explained General Manager Sarah Moores. “By moving our cabins, ticket booths, and trailhead systems to solar power, we’re improving safety, reducing environmental impact, and helping ensure our trail network remains sustainable for future generations.”

“SASCU is committed to supporting initiatives that create meaningful, measurable impact,” said Barry Delaney, SASCU President and CEO. “The Green Resilience Grant reflects our focus on investing in projects that not only address environmental challenges but also build stronger, more sustainable communities. These organizations are leading by example, and we are proud to support their work.”

Details on future grant opportunities will be posted at sascu.com/grants.
