SASCU Partners with Shuswap Food Action Society

SALMON ARM (August 28, 2025) — SASCU is partnering with Shuswap Food Action Society to support their vital role in promoting food security and education across the region.

Shuswap Food Action Society not only helps families access healthy food but also teaches people of all ages how to grow, cook, and enjoy it. These skills foster independence, build confidence, and contribute to stronger households and community resilience.

One of their favourite initiatives is Project Growth Youth Garden Contest. This hands-on program encourages children to grow their own gardens while learning about where their food comes from. Forty-three youth have signed up for this awesome challenge! With support from SASCU, contest winners receive deposits to their Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs). The Award Ceremony takes place September 13 downtown Salmon Arm.

SASCU also directly supports the Summer Entertainment Series at the Salmon Arm Farmers’ Market, a space that brings people together not just to shop but to connect, celebrate local talent, and strengthen the local economy.

“Support from SASCU allows us to grow programs that connect people to their food, their community, and each other,” said Liz Blakeway, Executive Director of the Shuswap Food Action Society. “From kids planting gardens to families learning how to cook together, we’re helping people feel more confident and connected through food.”

SASCU staff members also volunteer their time to support these efforts on the ground.
