New Marine Rescue Base 'Floated by SASCU'
SICAMOUS, BC (May 28th, 2025) – A celebration officially opened the new marine rescue base operated by the Shuswap Lifeboat Society supporting Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 106 in Sicamous on Saturday, May 24. This event included the unveiling of the new boathouse name “RCM SAR Station 106 Rescue Base — Floated by SASCU”.
“We are officially ‘Mission Ready’,” said Bruce Weicker, President of Shuswap Lifeboat Society. “This milestone represents years of planning, fundraising, personal time, collaboration, and actual building.
“Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen including SASCU. Our relationship with SASCU goes back years, particularly with their support of one of the first ‘Kids Don’t Float’ lifejacket kiosks in 2016 and we are pleased to have this new relationship going forward.”
The naming agreement includes a five year commitment in financial support from SASCU with extension potential. The partnership will evolve including sharing the great story of Station 106 and the impact this group of volunteers have on the region.
“Congratulations to the Shuswap Lifeboat Society on this exceptional project that will help save lives,” said Constance Ladell, Chair of SASCU Board of Directors. “It is so commendable how this group and many others persevered in making their vision a reality.”
“Our support and partnership go beyond a name on the building. Our organizations share a love for the Shuswap and—each in our own ways—strengthen the resiliency of the communities that touch our water’s shores.”
Station 106 has been serving the region since 2012. With the addition of the new floating base—anchored at the end of Main Street in Sicamous—the team now operates from a purpose-built facility designed to improve mission launch times, safeguard rescue vessels and gear, and provide critical space for training and patient privacy. The base includes innovative features like solar panels, fish-sensitive mesh decking, and energy-efficient climate control. The facility has already proven its worth, with crews responding to their first mission from the new base just weeks ago.
